Position: Hatchery Technician
Pay Range: $12-20/hr, dependent on experience
Position includes full medical/dental insurance (after 90 day waiting period)
Start Date: January 4, 2019

Whiskey Creek Shellfish Hatchery, located in Netarts, Oregon, is one of the largest shellfish hatcheries in the U.S., with a 40 year history of supplying shellfish larvae to growers throughout the Pacific Northwest. The hatchery is currently seeking qualified applicants for a permanent, full time hatchery technician position. Duties will include all aspects of hatchery production, including (but not limited to) spawning oysters, mussels, and clams, maintaining larval groups, single seed production, broodstock management, and production of microalgae. Prior experience working in shellfish hatcheries is preferred, but not absolutely necessary- the employee will work closely with existing staff to train in these areas.

This position is labor intensive, and will require the employee to regularly clean large tanks used for larval production. Algae production at Whiskey Creek is primarily accomplished using batch cultures, and will require the employee to transport carboys weighing 40-50 pounds on a daily basis.

The position will potentially require that the successful applicant work 1-2 swing shifts per week (typically 2–10PM). Whiskey Creek operates 7 days a week, and the successful applicant may also be required to work weekends.

Successful applicants must be self-motivated, able to work independently, and pay careful attention to detail in completing their daily duties. As with any live animals, shellfish larvae do not always conform to an expected schedule, and the employee must be dedicated to seeing their work to completion each day. Most importantly, Whiskey Creek is seeking applicants with a strong interest in shellfish aquaculture, and who are interested in pursuing a long term career in the field.
